Here are some family bucketlist ideas to visit in Switzerland:
– Braunwald : a picturesque car-free mountain village. Stay @maerchenhotel_braunwald , a fairytale paradise for families! They have thought of everything what families need!
– Lauterbrunnen: one of the prettiest valleys in Switzerland, and nicknamed the land of 72 waterfalls. Lauterbrunnen is located in the beating heart of Central Switzerland. This is one of the most charming, picturesque villages to stroll through. The valley is surrounded with waterfalls 💦casacading down the magnificent mountains and lush green meadows.
– Jungfraujoch: this is not a cheap daytrip, but we wanted to visit the famous Top of Europe. 🗻Jungfraujoch is the location of the highest train station in Europe, but it is not the highest mountain in Europe. Here you will get some amazing views of the Aletsch Glacier.🤩⛰️🏔️
– Stoos: in Central Switzerland is a very picturesque car-free mountain village. From Schwyz-Schlattli, you’ll take the Stoosbahn, the steepest funicular railway in the world. There are several hikes to do and the views are simply breathtaking! There were clouds gathering around the mountains tops when we were there and it was amazing!
– Lake Thun: a pretty lake with many activities and spectacular views. You can take a boat trip, visit the St Beatus caves , stroll around the many villages surrounding the lake, and do some hikes with guaranteed spectacular views.

how we traveled

We went on a roadtrip to Switzerland in October with our 6 young kids. Preparing for a family trip to Switzerland was messy, and busy. I was sleep deprived, while packing and doing laundry untill we left. We wanted to do an affordable family roadtrip in Switzerland.

Switzerland is quite expensive compared to the Netherlands, so we took along as much as possible. We took along frozen meals, breakfast and snacks for a full week. We also went shopping at Decathlon for proper hiking shoes and clothes. We decided to head to Graubunden in Switzerland. Graubunden is lesser known, but at least as beautiful as other regions in Switzerland. We decided to leave very early in the morning, to avoid the traffic jam. We woke the kids at 3.30 am. The night before, after a shower I put the to bed. They were already dressed for our roadtrip to Switzerland. In this way, they didnt have to change in the morning and were able to catch a bit more sleep in the car.

We left Amstelveen in the Netherlands around 4 am, and arrived around 4 pm in Switzerland. Rakesh drove most part, since I was taking care of the little kids. The views were getting better rand better! My husband had booked a beautiful appartement in Andermatt in Switzerland. We arrived at our appartement around 6 pm. It was such a relief to arrive after 11 hours of driving! The journey had taken up 14 hours alltogether including breaks.

Name of the appartment?

The appartement was very pretty and comfortable. We were all amazed by the great mountain views from the balcony. We unpacked, and had dinner. Rakesh and the kids played card games, while I prepared for the next morning.

We were happy our Swiss family adventure had started! Join us for  the next episode of our family trip in Switzerland!

caumaSee

Discover Caumasee with Kids: A Family Adventure in the Swiss Alps.

On our second day in Switzerland, we decided to drive to Cauma See. Cauma See is often referred to as the “jewel of the Alps,’ and perfect for families. We drove from our apartment in Andermatt to Cauma See and loved the great mountain sceneries on the way. We arrived at Cauma See and were amazed by its crystal clear , deep blue water. Caumasee (Lake Cauma) nestled in the picturesque region of Flims, is a stunning alpine lake in the Graubünden region. Caumasee is known for its crystal-clear waters, shady pine forests, and easy hiking trails.

Caumasee is a perfect destination for a day trip or weekend getaway with kids. What makes Caumasee especially ideal for families? • Shallow swimming areas safe for young kids • Playgrounds and green spaces nearby • Easy access via a funicular – a highlight for kids! • On-site restaurant and snack bars with child-friendly menus • Beautiful picnic spots surrounded by nature

Top Things to Do at Caumasee with Kids 1. Take the Funicular Down to the Lake Start your adventure with the Caumasee funicular, a short but fun ride from the car park down to the lake. 2. Swim in Turquoise Waters The lake has several entry points with gentle slopes, ideal for children to safely splash around. The water is refreshing but not too cold in summer, making it a great spot for swimming. We did not swim since we went in fall. 3. Explore the Playground Just a short walk from the lake is a playground surrounded by forest. 4. Rent a Paddleboat or Stand-Up Paddleboard Older kids will love paddling across the lake. Rentals are available right on the shore, and it’s a great way to explore the lake from a different perspective. 5. Go for a Nature Walk or Family Hike There are several easy hiking trails around Caumasee, including paths to nearby Lake Cresta (Crestasee) or the impressive Rheinschlucht (Rhine Gorge) – known as the “Swiss Grand Canyon.” Practical Tips for Visiting Caumasee with Children 📍 Getting There • Located in Flims, about 1.5 hours from Zurich by car • Parking available at “Caumasee Parkplatz” • Or take a train to Chur, then bus to Flims Waldhaus 🕒 Best Time to Visit • June to September is ideal for swimming and sunny picnics • Arrive early in the day during weekends to avoid crowds 🎟️ Entrance Fees • Adults: ~12 CHF • Children (6–16): ~6 CHF • Kids under 6: Free • Funicular included with entrance ticket 🍽️ Food & Drinks • Bring a picnic or eat at the on-site restaurant • Ice cream stands and snack bars available in summer

Jungfraujoch

Would you pay a lot of money to visit Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe?

We were convinced we should, since we were in the right area, and there is so much marketing going on about the Jungfraujoch. 🏔️
We went to Grindelwald Station. The staff was not very helpful, and didn’t inform us the snow activaties were closed.
We took the Eiger express, and this was a lovely ride up with great views. 🚠
We arrived at Eigergletscher, and transferred to a train on the Jungfraubahn to Jungfraujoch. Most of this ride is in a dark tunnel. ⚫️
Just before arriving in Jungfraujoch, the train stops for a five-minute break and you can get out for some views of the snowy Alps and the Aletsch Glacier through a dirty window. It was very crowded here, and very difficult to get a spot. 😭
Then we hopped back on the train and reached the highest point. We walked through the Jungfrau Panorama, a 360 cinematic representation of Jungfraujoch. Then we reached the Sphinx terrace. Here we had some  amazing views of the Aletsch Glacier.🤩⛰️🏔️
Sadly, the Snow Fun Park for activities, was closed when we went in October. ⛷️⛷️🎿
I would have loved to do a hike outside and walk the trail to Mönchsjochhütte, but this was also closed when we were there.😭
We were on the famous Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch, but we felt trapped inside a building and in tunnels.
The Alpine Sensation was cute , but honestly we can find similar displays in every garden center in the Netherlands as well.👧
The Ice Palace was quite nice.🧊❄️
To us, Jungfraujoch was crowded, very touristy and didn’t live up to the hype. Jungfraujoch was not a great experience, and very expensive. We spent 800 USD. It would have been much better if we had been able to walk outside, and do the trail tot the Mönchsjochhütte.
Is Jungfraujoch on your list ?
Visiting Jungfraujoch will cost you a fortune. Is it is worth visiting Jungfraujoch?
We visited Jungfraujoch with our family of 8 and we spent 800 USD! 🤑

Lake Thun
The views we woke up to, were incredible at Lake Thun!
We stayed with our family of 8 in an Airbnb, situated above the lake.
In the morning, we watched the clouds moving slowly above the lake and it felt like we were in heaven! Lake Thun is also a great area to stay if you want to explore more in Central Switzerland.
Can you imagine some people wake up daily with such views
Braunwald
Have you ever heard of Braunwald?
This car-free village dotted with picturesque mountain houses is surrounded by the stunning GlarnerAlps.
We stayed @maerchenhotel_braunwald , a fairytale hotel where everything felt magical.🥰

The Märchenhotel in Switzerland is a stunning, family hotel in the car-free village Braunwald, a true gem in the mountains!

Great memories made ✅
We had an epic stay @maerchenhotel_braunwald 🇨🇭
A hotel with endless activities for the kids , playgardens outside and inside , a hotel with goats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and lama’s, and the sweetest staff ever!🐰🐐
At night, the sky was full with stars and wishes that became reality ..⭐️⭐️
Have you ever stayed at a fairytale hotel? 🤩
We have stayed at many hotels and resorts and never had the opportunity to swim in the pool 24/7! This was awesome! 💦
We arrived @maerchenhotel_braunwald in the afternoon. We unpacked, enjoyed our epic room, and had a delicious dinner. There were some kids’ activities , and around 10 pm I wanted the kids to get some sleep. However, they were in vacation mood and felt like swimming. I couldnt believe the pool didn’t close at this family friendly hotel! 🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️🏊
We got dressed and went to the pool. Had the place all to ourselves!
Would you go swimming with your kids at 10 pm? 💦
@maerchenhotel_braunwald was magical, from the moment we were picked up from the cable car station untill the end of our stay.🥰
A hotel with endless activities for the kids , playgardens outside and inside , a hotel with goats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and lama’s, and the sweetest staff ever!🐰🐐
We were heartedly welcomed right from the start, and Catarina showed us around. On the first day, we had a wonderful dinner, and plunged in the pool at night. The second day we had a delicious breakfast with views of mountains, and the goats on the bridge just outside the breakfast area. We chatted along with the sweet staff, went out with alpaca’s and lama’s 🦙🦙and had a lovely time at the playground. The jacuzzi and sauna were superb and we all enjoyed these facilities so much! 💦
At night, the sky was full with stars and wishes that became reality ..⭐️⭐️
The next day , after a delicious breakfast and many goodbyes, we left , sad but enriched by all these beautiful memories made and the sweet people we met @maerchenhotel_braunwald ! 🤩
Staubbach Falls
Have you ever heard of Staubbach Falls? This is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Switzerland!💦
Staubbach Falls is located in Lauterbrunnen and one of Europe’s highest free-falling waterfalls. It takes only a short, five-minute walk from the village center to the Staubbach falls.
The waterfall is plunging nearly 300 meters from a rocky cliff into the Lauterbrunnen Valley.🤩
During warmer months, when the snow melts, the waterfall creates a wonderful misty cloud flowing around the running water, which gives it an aetherial character.
Poets like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe were highly inspired by this waterfall.📚
There is a short trail (0.2 mile) up a to Staubbach Falls where you can walk directly behind the waterfall.🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️
The hike is easy enough for kids, but parts of it are through rock caves and can get slippery. I slipped 🙈 even while wearing proper hiking boots.
Sadly enough we didn’t get to the top, since we waited for half an hour in line and decided to return. We wanted to walk through the valley and walk The Trummelbach trail that same day, so we decided to leave. 🥲
The Staubbach Falls trail is only open during warmer months from June – October and the entrance is free.
Trummelbachfalls
Did you ever see waterfalls inside a mountain? I didn’t even know this is possible! 💦
Trümmelbach Falls are the largest underground glacier waterfalls in the world and an UNESCO World heritage site! 🤩These falls are the only glacier waterfalls in Europe that are still accessible. 😳
Trümmelbach Falls is a system of 10 waterfalls inside the mountains, carving through rocks. The sound of thundering water dropping down at an immense speed, is incredibly powerful and impressive. Up to 20,000 liters per second of glacier water rush through the caverns.🗻
The Trummelbach drains the glacier defiles of Eiger ( 3970 m), Monch (4099 m), and Jungfrau ( 4158 m), and carries 20200 tons of boulder detritus per year. 🪨
You can see the falls by using an illuminated system of paths, stairs, and an elevator.
If you have difficulty with walking up, you can use the elevator to the top and continue to walk down, passing the 10 viewpoints at every waterfall.
It’s advisable to wear a rain jacket and shoes with some traction. There is a small entrance fee. Note that children under 4 years old are not permitted. When you visit with older children, do watch your kids carefully, and don’t bend over the railings. The force with which the waterfalls come down , is immense!
Trümmelbach Falls are easy to reach from  Lauterbrunnen. You can take a scenic 2.2-mile hike from Lauterbrunnen to Trümmelbach Falls.
Alternatively, you can reach Trümmelbach Falls from Lauterbrunnen via an 8-minute bus ride or by car.
This might be the prettiest valley you will ever see .. 🤩

Lauterbrunnen, nicknamed the land of 72 waterfalls, is located in the beating heart of Central Switzerland. This is one of the most charming, picturesque villages to stroll through. The valley is surrounded with waterfalls 💦casacading down the magnificent mountains and lush green meadows.
We drove  to Lauterbrunnen , parked our car just off the main road, and walked the valley hike. This is an easy, flat, and stroller friendly path that stretches approximately 4 km. 😀
